Book Bites: 3 Sentence Intro About What This Story Is

A young prince must quickly find a bride before he takes the throne. The search becomes more difficult than he and his parents originally thought. However, he finds his partner and true love in the most unexpected places while fighting against a dragon that is ravaging through his kingdom.

Now on to My Commentary (**May Contain Spoilers: Read at Your Own Risk)

This is a children’s book meant for ages four through eight, but when I saw this book recommended under the LGBTQ+ Pride Month list, it immediately caught my eye and I had to read it!

Prince & Knight is like a modernized update that echoes the story of King & King (2003) by Linda de Haan and Stern Nijland with gorgeous colorful illustrations and a poetic story that will warm your hearts.

The rich, eye-catching illustrations by Stevie Lewis paired with Daniel Haack’s classic tug-at-your-heartstrings fairytale plot are comparable to that of Disney. Its tender simplicity makes me feel nostalgic of the days I binged watched Disney films as a child. Okay, okay. I admit I still binge watch Disney films now.

Haack decided to write Prince & Knight because there is undeniably a shortage of love stories that depict all kinds of love. The prince in this book falls in love with a knight. Not a maiden. Not a princess. Nope! This lucky lad found his knight in shining armor. Certainly a story not like your common fairytale couple. And that’s what makes it phenomenal.

Let me jump into my soap box for a second. I’m not a parent, but if I was, I would expose my child to books like these because I believe it’s so important for the younger audience to be introduced to many things in the world in order for them to develop their awareness and compassion for diversity.

Prince & Knight contributes to creating this sense of normalcy that all kinds of love are out there. That’s what makes love beautiful!

Stories are meant to engage us and evoke our deepest emotions. We want to relate to the characters. To go on the adventures they do. To see the heroes as positive role models that inspire us to be our best selves. That’s exactly what this book does. It’s a tale of the journey of love and acceptance for boys who want to find their one true love, which may not be a princess. I’m grateful that Haack and Lewis add to the growingly diverse literature with Prince & Knight because everyone should know that there really is a true love prince or princess for everyone regardless of your gender and sexuality.

Daniel Haack also co-writes Maiden & Princess, a children’s book about two females falling in love if you want some more fairytale reading.

The Good

• Will-make-you-cry level of adorableness with pictures comparable to a Disney film

The I’m-Not-So-Sure-About-That (AKA constructive criticism)/Parts I Didn’t Like

• NOT LONG ENOUGH. Just kidding. It is a children’s book, but I couldn’t get enough of these two lovebirds!

Final Thoughts

Grew up loving fairytales and stories about princes, knights, and dragons? I certainly this. Hopeless romantic ‘til the end! What are you waiting for? Get the book!
