No Words: A Novel By Meg Cabot (Little Bridge Island #3)

ISBN: 978-0063082250

Page Count: 368 (average joe but ain’t no joke)

Genre: romantic-comedy, romance, drama

“I think if you write about characters who are perfect, they have no room to grow or improve during the course of the story, and then what do they learn about themselves? Characters learning new things about themselves is part of what makes the story entertaining. But if the character is already perfect, they have no room to grow. So then you have no story.”

Book Bites: 3 Sentence Intro About What This Story Is

Children’s author, Jo Wright, has been struggling lately with writer’s block, taking care of an ill father and general loss of confidence in her professional career. All thanks to fellow bestselling author, Will Price’s, public criticism about her life’s work. Things take a shocking turn when she finds out her invitation to attend and speak at Little Bridge Island’s first book festival…was at the insistence of her nemesis, Will Price, the man she never wanted to face again after the damage he’s caused her.

Now on to My Commentary (**May Contain Spoilers: Read at Your Own Risk)

You shouldn’t make rash judgments about a person.

Classic rivals-to-lovers romance during a weekend festival at beautiful Little Bridge Island in the Florida Keys. For children’s author Jo Wright and young adult romance author Will Price, this weekend will be one for the books (literally).

I love this book! It’s got snark, sass, love, heart and soul along with a great cast of fun personalities. Entertaining rom-com moments that have you turning the pages. Intriguing insight into an author’s life. Moving messages about loss, life and love.

No Words is the perfect summer read for any bibliophile!

I feel like it was cathartic for Meg Cabot to write this. The readers get a glimpse into an author’s professional life and struggles: facing and overcoming “writer’s block”, PR messes, event surprises, meeting fans, having supportive writer friends, and responding to and handling critics. One could almost see No Words doubling over as a fun, advice book written through a fictional story.

As a writer myself, I resonated with the rewards and challenges of being a writer that were presented in this book. It touched my heart because I absolutely get the struggles! And as a reader and fan of many authors’ works, it was heart-warming to empathize with the fans in the story who got to interact with their favorite authors and let them know how much their stories impacted them. Particularly the younger audience, fans of the children’s author’s books, who were all grown up and mentioned how much they cherish certain series growing up. Made me so nostalgic of my own favorite series!

The romance was paced well. Due to a rash comment he made years ago, Jo Wright resented Will Price, who, over the years, has regretted his thoughtless comment and has been finding ways to apologize to her. What better way than to be stuck together for a whole weekend on an island?

Yes, the majority of the book Jo hates Will and is suspicious of his actions, still having the impression that the highly successful author was an arrogant, uncaring rich bitch. However, as we all begin to learn more about Will’s complex, unfortunate backstory, we (especially Jo, though she fights to resist this) easily fall in love with him. Will worked hard to achieve the high level of success he did. He’s anything but arrogant. Honestly, I think his bluntness is just a British thing. Will is a sweet, goofy British gentleman! Not to mention, hot, hot, hot!

I know this is to drive the plot of the story but I didn’t like how Jo assumed the worst of this man and resented him so much at the beginning. Felt like a jealous teenager. Made for some hilarious misunderstandings between her and Will though!

The ending of the book/resolution was a little quick. Felt like a Lifetime movie. Will and Jo get together. They close the festival and it ends there. It felt somewhat anticlimactic to me, especially after this beautiful progression of Will and Jo’s growing closer.

Again I have to keep in mind that the festival and course of the whole story took place in three days so you can’t expect the deepest relationship (that should have taken weeks to achieve) between these two. The fact that Cabot was able to make a convincing character arc for both Jo and Will’s growth was impressive enough for me. I still think Cabot did a wonderful job trying to deepen the relationship between Will and Jo as best as realistically possible to get to know someone in a three-day timeframe.

I was completely immersed when reading No Words! Beautiful setting and island scenery. Felt like I went on a mini vacation myself over the week I read this. If they had a book festival in as gorgeous and magical a setting as Little Bridge Island, sign me up!

Having the story within a story aspect was very interesting and super fun to read! I would absolutely love to read a full length version of Will Price’s The Moment. If you don’t know what the hell I’m talking about, read No Words and it’ll introduce Will’s book.

Overall, great read! Real kick for those who are writers, authors or aspiring writers who need a fun, compassionate and hilarious book about their careers.

Final Thoughts

Check out this book if it piques your interest. Hope you enjoy it as your next read or a re-read!

And remember, “Every story is worth the read. Someone (some poor, overworked, ink-stains-on-the-clothes lovely soul) took the time to write it.”
